Vaccination

Your new pet must be vaccinated, against a number of illnesses.

Dogs are vaccinated against a total of 5 illnesses routinely. These are - Parvovirus, Distemper, Parainfluenza, Leptospira and Canine Adenovirus. While some of these have decreased in incidence, there is still evidence that a number of these exist in the Glasgow area - such as Parvovirus - especially in unvaccinated populations of dogs.

Two vaccinations are administered to protect your dog. The first injection is administered as early as 6 weeks and the second at 10 weeks. Keeping in quarantine from other dogs until 7 days after the 2nd injection is important to ensure that your pet is fully protected.

A separate vaccine is sometimes given to dogs for Kennel Cough. While this vaccine is not 100% protective we recommend it since infectious coughing is now the commonest infectious disease we see in dogs.

A rabies vaccination can also be administered. If interested please see the section on Pet Passport.

Cat vaccinations are are against Feline Calici/Herpesvirus (wghich cause catflu) and also Feline Leukaemia. The vaccines start at 9 weeks and there should be a 3 week gap between injections.

All cats should be covered for cat flu and any cat which goes out and might meet other cats should be protected against Feline Leukaemia virus.

Rabbits should be vaccinated for Myxomatosis and a fatal disease called Viral Haemorrhagic Disease. These have increased in incidence over the last few years, and thereby vaccination is highly recommended.

Ferrets are another species which can also be vaccinated. If you would wish more information on this, please contact the surgery.

All pet vaccines require annual boosters. This is also the time for your annual health check. We check teeth, eyes, ears, skin, heart, lungs and abdomen. As pets become older we also check for early stages of old age disease and will carry out urine and blood tests.
