Health Examinations

Health ExaminationA good health examination of an animal is our best tool in preventing and beginning to diagnose disease in pets. At Pets‘n’Vets, our patients cannot tell us ‘where it hurts’ or ‘how they feel’, or even ‘what they have eaten’, and this separates us from our colleagues in human medicine adding another dimension to our work.

There is no doubt that a really good health examination, combined with our experience, is one of our very best diagnostic tools. All pets that come into a Pets‘n’Vets Family Surgery for vaccination, health check, with an illness or prior to a procedure will receive a full health examination from a veterinary surgeon.

We would usually check:

  • General condition including alertness, body condition, coat quality and responsiveness
  • Eyes and ears for infection or abnormalities
  • Mouth and teeth for infection and dental disease
  • Superficial lymph nodes for size and shape
  • Chest auscultation – heart and lungs
  • Abdominal palpation – often we can feel liver, spleen, kidneys, intestines and bladder (particularly in cats and smaller dogs)
  • Joints and feet – in older animals particularly; we check spine, hips, neck and if required the joints of the limbs
  • External Genitalia – vulva, penis and testicles
  • Claws – checking for claw length and damage

Depending on the purpose of your visit, we may check some things more quickly or in further detail. You may be amazed to know how intimately we know your pets in just a few minutes!

We would recommend that all pets have a full health check at least once a year; usually this is carried out when they receive their annual vaccinations. As pets get older it is a good idea to have them checked over more frequently. Your vet will advise of how often your particular pet should be reassessed.
